Fiep Westendorp: a feast for the eye
Drawings, advertisements and many other eye-catching works by the best-known Dutch woman illustrator
Exhibition from 18 June through 23 October 2016
Fiep Westendorp made the well-known illustrations for the stories of Jip and Janneke, Floddertje, Pim & Pom and Pluk van de Petteflet. In addition to this familiar work, the exhibition introduces another facet of Fiep Westendorp’s oeuvre: advertisements, posters and dust-jackets made during a career spanning sixty years. Many of these original designs have never been seen before by the general public. The exhibition is the official kickoff of the celebration of the hundredth birthday of Fiep Westendorp which will be accompanied by a whole host of activities.
The exhibition presents, among other things, advertisements for KLM, informational brochures for the Dutch Dairy Board and the NVSH (Dutch Society for Sexual Reform), and early illustrations including many book covers and posters. For twenty years (between 1948 and 1968), Fiep worked for the women’s page of Het Parool. The mostly serious articles by Harriët Freezer and Annie M.G. Schmidt were accompanied by her light-hearted drawings. When the columns were collected and published in book form, Fiep Westendorp designed the covers.
For the Illustration Biennial, sponsored by the Fiep Westendorp Foundation, the organizers asked ten illustrators to design a cover for their favourite books. These covers are part of the exhibition. Every two years, the Fiep Westendorp Foundation presents awards to support the work of young illustrators. Video clips of their work give an insight into the creative process.
Children and adults can enjoy the exhibition together. There is a route for children with amusing tasks along the way. In a special room, visitors can have a go at making their own drawingsHow is a book illustration made? What makes an illustration by Fiep Westendorp so powerful and recognizable? All the activities are listed in the agenda of Museum Meermanno.
The exhibition was organized in collaboration with Fiep Amsterdam bv, whose director, Gioia Smid, is the compiler. With thanks to Fiep Amsterdam bv, the Fiep Westendorp Foundation, the Mondriaanfonds, the VSB fonds and Stichting Zabawas.
In order to let as many people as possible enjoy the work of Fiep Westendorp, Museum Meermanno and Fiep Amsterdam bv, have organized a second, compact library exhibition which tells the story of Fiep Westendorp as an illustrator. This exhibition will travel to eighty libraries throughout the country from May 2016 to the end of 2017.
