From lead to LED

The development of the book since 1850

‘From lead to LED’ is a permanent display concerning the development of the book from 1850 to the present, displaying a changing selection of highlights from the Museum’s collection of modern international books.

Walk along a timeline beginning with ‘lead’, the period when books were printed with lead type, to ‘LED’, the present day when e-books are becoming ever more popular. Along the way, you can discover the technical changes in book production which have occurred, the objective of making books available for the reading public and the goal of giving books a good, contemporary design.

The exhibition was developed in co-operation with CB (formerly the Centraal Boekhuis). Thanks to a generous agreement to sponsor the exhibition for a number of years, the museum can show the very latest developments. The extensive collection of the museum tells the story together with photographs and video clips featuring mini-lectures by Lisa Kuitert, professor of Book Studies at the University of Amsterdam.
