MAX KISMAN: SEX ONLY Diary documents 1987-2017
Exhibition ‘Sex only. Max Kisman Diary documents 1987- 2017'
10 april through 10 june 2018
Designer and illustrator Max Kisman (Doetinchem, 1953) made his reputation as a pioneer in the use of digital technology in graphic design. In a career spanning almost forty years, he has worked for clients such as Paradiso, VPRO television, the Volkskrant and the Financieele Dagblad in addition to teaching typography and illustration.
For thirty years, Kisman has recorded at least one event per day in a diary in a style that is immediately recognizable, sometimes with figures in silhouette or from a characteristic bird’s-eye perspective and captions with a vertical orientation. He writes and draws in a reflective, journalistic way about what is going on in his life. Work, family, friends, women, desires and dreams are recorded. It doesn’t matter so much what he draws on a particular day as long as he draws something.
The exhibition ‘Sex Only’ consists of a selection from 20,000 diary drawings. The recurrent theme is the desire for physical interaction and emotional connection. ‘Sex Only’ shows in a graphic way how desire, passion and pleasure stimulate the imagination. Enlargements of diary drawings are supplemented by unique wall paintings which Kisman created especially for this exhibition. They make crystal-clear the role that sex plays in life: it is the driving force that nurtures personal growth and creativity.
